In 1900 the school came
under the control of the County Board of Education. In 1906 a second
room was added Mary Alice Jackson was the head teacher and an assistant,
Mrs. Tomie Hunter was hired. In 1924 Meeler Hill became part of the city
school system and in 1935 a third room was added. By 1948 it was a 7
room school and in 1949 Muscogee County purchased 33 acres on Shepherd Drive
for a school. In 1952 there were 14 classrooms a cafeteria, office and
clinic. In 1953 Meeler Hill School was annexed with Shepherd Drive
School, at this time there were 23 rooms and 810 students.
Betweeen 1953 and 1959, 6 rooms were added (the back wing) and in 1959
Shepherd Drive School became J.D. Davis Elementary, so named for school
principal Jefferson D. Davis.
In the 1964-65 school year
there was a 6 room addition to the front of the school. The library
addition was added in 1965 along with 10 rooms.
In 1997 the school received a new roof and in
2003 and 2004 major renovations were done. These renovations included 4
classrooms, a gymnasium. The library had 2 rooms enclosed, new floors,
bulletin boards and paint. Classrooms received new floors, cabinets &
sinks, dry erase boards and paint. The cafeteria and offices were also
updated and painted. With new rooms enclosed to create a conference room
and a clinic room. |
